One has to wonder whether this has more to do with the febrile nature of Oxford Liberal Democrats, noting that the leader of the group is amongst the supporters of Mr Huhne. Sanctimony from local councillors, especially those effective at fighting Labour, is quite hard to take seriously.

Yes, belligerence has its place. But, as you say, that should be reserved for journos and our 'political opponents' -- not (in public, at least) colleagues on the front bench. Different situations have different rules of engagement and, in the case of a leadership battle within our own party, there are very particular unwritten rules. Misjudging which rules to use at which time does not bode well.

David, Your analysis has a great more appreciation of "real politik" than most of the horrified reaction to Huhne's onslaught - but how long before people start querying why the milksop Clegg was not better able to defend himself, and whether it might not actually be high time the Lib Dems had a leader who is actually capable of being beliggerent toward both political opponents and tv interviewers?
